What Is a Tongue Scraper?
A tongue scraper is a small, curved tool — typically made from stainless steel or copper — designed to remove the bacteria-laden coating (called biofilm) from the surface of your tongue. When used daily, it significantly reduces bad breath and improves overall oral hygiene.
How Does a Tongue Scraper Work?
You hold both ends of the scraper, place the curved edge at the back of your tongue, and draw it forward gently. The scraper collects the white or yellowish coating that accumulates overnight. Rinse and repeat 2–3 times for a complete clean.
Do Tongue Scrapers Actually Work?
Yes — and the evidence is clear. Multiple clinical studies show that tongue scrapers reduce volatile sulphur compounds (VSCs), the main cause of bad breath, by up to 75% more effectively than tongue brushing alone. Toothbrushes are not designed for this task and don't perform as well.
Copper vs Stainless Steel Tongue Scrapers
Both work well. Copper has natural antimicrobial properties, making it a favourite in Ayurvedic tradition — the DrTung's Copper Tongue Cleaner is a popular choice. Stainless steel is more durable and easier to sterilise. The DrTung's Stainless Steel version is an excellent daily tool.
How Often Should You Use a Tongue Scraper?
Once daily — ideally in the morning before eating or drinking. This removes the overnight bacterial buildup at its peak.
Is a Tongue Scraper Right for You?
If you experience bad breath, a coated tongue, or taste disturbances, yes — a tongue scraper is one of the highest-impact changes you can make to your oral routine. It takes under 30 seconds and the results are noticeable from day one.
