Enzycal toothpaste

What should a toothpaste be made of? What is actually in toothpastes? Is it all necessary – and is it even healthy? We asked ourselves these questions when we decided to add a logical extension to our range of interdental brushes and toothbrushes: a toothpaste. This toothpaste was to be just like our other products: pleasant – above all, with a genuine benefit – and without being harmful. Many toothpastes on the market not only cause tooth abrasion and irritate the mouth – but can also cause ulcers. Our research and development team came up with the perfect solution: CURAPROX enzycal.

Everything that might possibly be harmful has been eliminated. Instead, it supports the protective function of the saliva. Enzycal contains no aggressive substances. The aggressive foaming agent, sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) found in most toothpastes has been replaced by a neutral one. Essential oils such as menthol have been reduced to a minimum. Even the RDA is low. In contrast, Enzycal has three enzymes that are already present in saliva – this miracle fluid in oral hygiene can even repair dental enamel. The saliva with its protective and repair functions is further boosted by the enzymes in Enzycal – which also prevents mouth dryness. Enzycal thus ensures healthy teeth, gums and mouth. It also tastes just as mild as it actually is – so mild that it even helps combat mouth ulcers.

On an autumn day, back in 2007, my Head of Sales, André Leardini, came into my office. We didn’t have any toothpaste in our range and he was absolutely determined to have one.

I was against it. 

“CURAPROX is interdental care,” I told him, “and we have the finest and most efficient products around and we should concentrate on those.”
“Yes, we’ve got a toothbrush,” André replied, “but we simply don’t have a toothpaste.” Leaning back, he continued: “We need a toothpaste, Ueli. It’s that simple.”

“Toothpastes are interchangeable,” I replied. You can actually do without toothpaste since plaque is removed mechanically using interdental brushes and a toothbrush. Toothpastes provide freshness and fluoride, nothing more. “If we produce a toothpaste, André, then it’ll have to be a special one that gives our customers real benefits. Just like our interdental brushes and toothbrushes: they clean more thoroughly than all the others on the market and much more gently. To my mind, a toothpaste is not a starting point.”

A few months later, André came to me again. This time he brought Frank Popp, our Head of Sales in Germany. They declared that they now had a toothpaste and I listened.

What Frank and André told me gave us the opportunity to produce a toothpaste that meets our requirements. 
It won’t be easy to find customers for this new toothpaste. The big market players are too well-established and it goes without saying that there are too many of them.

Sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) attacks the cells of the mouth. This leads to irritation and injuries proven to favour the formation of painful soreness and even mouth ulcers. SLS is nevertheless used as a foaming agent in almost all toothpastes.

There is a risk that SLS can penetrate the body through the mouth. Whether SLS is harmful to health is still a cause for discussion but has not yet been proven. It is nevertheless surprising that SLS is found in almost all toothpastes.

Enzycal is SLS-free, which means significantly fewer ulcers. No controversial substances that can even penetrate the body. To put it briefly: Enzycal toothpaste guarantees natural and long-lasting dental care.

With no SLS, Enzycal does not foam as much as other toothpastes. This has another benefit as it enhances the hydrodynamic effect of a sonic toothbrush making brushing with one more effective.

Enzycal enzymes boost saliva protection in a natural way: these enzymes are already present in saliva to stabilise and substantially strengthen its antibacterial and remineralising functions.

Saliva is very important for oral health. Thanks to its enzymes and minerals, saliva protects teeth, gums, tongue and the mouth from plaque and bacteria. Saliva thus neutralises the pH in the oral cavity, combats harmful bacteria and helps prevent mouth infections.

Enzymes and minerals such as fluoride ensure that teeth are protected against caries and gums against periodontitis.

Well to get technical for a moment, the enzyme amyloglucosidase breaks down glucans (e.g. starches in the plaque matrix). It also boosts the effect of the enzyme lactoperoxidase in the saliva. As a reaction, hypothiocyanite ions are formed from thiocyanate ions and hydrogen peroxide and these have superb bacteriostatic properties.
Thanks to the three enzymes in Enzycal, this lactoperoxidase system is additionally supported and bacterial growth is naturally restricted.

Enzyme 1= Amyloglucosidase: Changes polyglucans (plaque matrix) into glucose.

Enzyme 2 = Glucoseoxidase: Changes glucose in competition with the plaque bacteria into gluconate, thereby reducing the spread of bacteria.

Enzyme 3 = Lactoperoxidase with thiocyanate: the H2O2 from the glucose transformation reacts with thiocyanate to become hypothiocyanate, a naturally occurring antibacterial substance in saliva.

With sodium fluoride


Sodium fluoride is the simplest fluoride compound of all. This simplicity has an important benefit: it means that sodium fluoride ions are quickly and easily available to the tooth enamel.

Fluoride strengthens the enamel, making it resistant to acids. In the process, fluoride even remineralises decalcified enamel. Fluoride restricts the growth of harmful plaque bacteria, thus preventing caries.

Even better: the effect of these highly available fluorides in Enzycal is boosted even further by the unique enzyme combination.

Enzycal is a less abrasive toothpaste. With an RDA value of ~ 50, it cleans gently yet thoroughly. When used with one of our CS toothbrushes, it will clean your teeth gently and effectively.

Standard toothpastes have a strong flavour – often so strong that your sense of taste is affected. Excessively strong essential flavour additives can even irritate the mouth and in turn sometimes cause ulcers.

This is why Enzycal only contains the absolute minimum of menthol. In brief, it contains no essential substances that might harm the mouth. Enzycal’s mild taste is thus an expression of its strength.
